✦ Synopsis

It is shown that two geometrical phases can be assigned to an energy band in a solid. Under some symmetry conditions these two phases coincide. A precise relation is established between these two phases, and it is shown that for pyroelectric Ž . ferroelectric crystals these two phases are, in general, different.
