. Geographical variation in monthly rainfall and milk production in eastern New South Wales. Agric. Meteorol., 26: 255--264.

Rainfall--milk production relationships could occur if non-irrigated pasture formed the principal feed source for dairy herds and if rainfall had a dominant influence on pasture growth patterns. Regressions of four-weekly rainfall and milk production over a two-year period were examined for forty locations in eastern New South Wales, and rainfall--milk production associations were found to be present mainly in areas where economic incentives to reduce production fluctuations were least. In these low production-quota areas, month-to-month variation in milk production was greater than elsewhere, even though rainfall variation was lower than at other places in the state. The seasonal availability of moisture in these areas had a sufficiently strong influence on pasture growth for rainfall to be associated with changes in milk output.
