✦ Synopsis

As a rule each issue of Space Science Reviews contains papers on various aspects of space research, mostly not directly related to each other. However, we thought it useful, once in a while, to publish in one issue the opinions of different authors on the same subject. So, the reader will find in this issue two papers on the use of satellites for geodetic studies.

By doing this we hoped to arrive at two completely independent reviews of this part of space science, with, on one hand, its extreme precision, and on the other hand the divergence of opinions in the interpretation of subtle details in the measurements. The reader may judge whether we succeeded in this attempt.
