Within the next few years crop plants will be available designed to be resistant to nonselective herbicides, which damage both crop plants and weeds. These plants should allow weed control by non-selective herbicides on fields under cultivation. The non-selective herbicides chosen should compared to selective herbicides possess improved ecological and toxicological properties and offer the farmer more effective control at a reduced cost. Economic interests, however, may lead to the development of new plants resistant to herbicides already available, whose application may, for toxicological reasons, represent a hazard.
