Secondarily homothallic basidiomycetes, of which the cultivated mushroom Agaricus bisporus is an example, produce both self-fertile and non self-fertile spores. The random migration of nuclei from the basidia to give binucleate spores provides the simplest explanation for the regulation of breeding
