✦ Synopsis
The integrins are a large family of heterodimeric c~/3 subunit receptors expressed at the cell surface which mediate cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions (reviewed by Albelda and Buck 1990;Hemler 1990;Springer 1990). To date eleven distinct c~ subunits and eight separate/3 subunits have been isolated; and the primary sequences of 18 of these have been revealed by complementary DNA cloning. By exploiting conserved sequences shared among the/3 subunits, with the aid of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), we amplified a previously unidentified integrin /3 subunit, termed /37, from human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL;Yuan et al. 1990).
