figure 1. It will be seen that the black and brown groups diverged from each other after only one or two generations of brother-sister mating following the original mating by Dr. C. C. Little in 1921. They thus constitute two totally different groups of inbred strains. I n addition, animals from an Fl generation between the two groups (C57BL/6JAX x C57BR/cd) were also examined, as follows : C57BL/BJAX 53 mice C57BR/a 44 mice C57BL/Bp 50 " C57L/JAX 29 l 1 C57BL/10Sc 24 BL X BR F, 50 ' l C57BR/cd 50 " ' The apparent absence of No. 13 from C57BL/lOSc and of Nos. 22 and 25 from C57BL/6JAX is not statistically significant and presumably due to accidents of sampling.
