✦ Synopsis
Genetic v a r i a b i l i t y of the p h o s p h o g l u c o s e isomerase (PGI) and p h o s p h o g l u c o m u t a s e (PGM) loci are compared in Patella vulgata L. and P. aspera Lamark from two sites on the west and south coasts of Ireland. p. vulgata was less v a r i a b l e than P. aspera at these 2 loci, and in only I of 7 other loci briefly examined was P. vulgata more variable. E v i d e n c e is also p r e s e n t e d that the PGI enzyme in p. vulgata is more stable at high t e m p e r a t u r e than that of P. aspera. The s i g n i f i c a n c e of these observations is d i s c u s s e d in the light of the d i f f e r e n t zonal d i s t r i b u t i o n s of these species on the shore.
