✦ Synopsis

Povidone-iodine is capable of specifically altering the DNA of living cells. This alteration may result in the induction of mutations of the base-substitution type. Because of the known relationship between mutagenic potential and the ability to induce cancer in animals, the present findings raise serious questions concerning the safety of this topical disinfectant.

Hydrogen triiodide adducts were prepared from N,N-dimethylacetamide, N-alkylpyrrolidone derivatives, and polyvinylpyrrolidone, and their structures were investigated by IR spectra and X-ray structure analyses and compared with the structure of povidone-iodine USP. The results suggest that the iodine
