✦ Synopsis
An approach to representing design standards in a flexible form suitable for generalized use is investigated. Current methods of encoding design rules are seen as too inflexible. Standards are represented as databases of facts which are used when needed by a rule-based design conformance checking program. A generic knowledge-based standards processing architecture is presented as Standards Processing In a Knowledge-based Expert system (SPIKE) environment. A research prototype of SPIKE has been implemented and is described.
