β¦ Synopsis
General variational theorems in which the displacement, the stress, and the strain in one case, and the displacement and the stress in another case, are given independent variations, and which include appropriate general bondary and discontinuity conditions, are developed with a view toward the application to harmonic waves in elastic composites with periodic structures. The one-dimensional case is first developed in detail, and in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the results, especially their accuracy in providing the dispersion curve, waves propagating normal to layers in a layered composite are discussed, and numerical results are presented; see Tables I andII. Then the general three-dimensional case is considered, and the results are applied to waves propagating normal to the fibers in a fiber-reinforced composite.

Les th6or6mes g6n6raux variationels, dans lesquels on varie ind6pendemment le d6placement, la contrainte et la d6formation, dans le premier cas, et le d6placement et la contrainte, dans le second cas, et qui fournissent de m6me les conditions aux limites et les conditions de discontinuit6, sont d6velop6s dans le but d'application aux ondes harmoniques dans les mat6riaux,composites h structure p6riodique. Le cas d'une seule d i m e n s i o n est d'abord expos6 en d6tail, et pour d6montrer l'efficacit6 des r6sultats, en particulier la pr6cision avec laquelle la courbe de dispersion peut ~tre determin6e, le cas d'ondes se propageant normalement aux conches du mat6riel composite est discut6 et des r6sultats num6riques sont pr6sent6s (voir Tables I e t II). Par suite, le cas g6neral en trois dimensions est consid6r6 et les r6sultats sont appliqu6s aux ondes qui se propagent normalement aux fibres dans un mat6riel renforc6 par fibres.
