In the title compound, C 5 H 11 NO 2 S, the conformation of the terminal methyl C atom with respect to the -C atom is trans. The crystal structure is stabilized by a network of characteristic head-to-tail dl1 and dl2 sequences.

✦ Synopsis
DL-Methionine [C 5 H 11 NO 2 S] is one of the essential amino acids in humans. It has two crystalline forms, viz., α-and β-methionine. In the present study, βform is crystallized in silica gel under suitable pH conditions by single diffusion method. The grown crystals were characterized by density measurement and single crystal Xray diffraction. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic studies, thermal analysis and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) studies were also made as part of the structural studies.
