has begun a trial using hydroelectricity to generate hydrogen for use in FCVs. According to a Nihon Keizai Shimbun report, the alliance is using hydroelectric facilities operated by Taiheiyo Cement affiliate Yakushima Denko Co on the rain-rich southern island of Yakushima to create one of the world's first large-scale energy systems that is completely free from the use of fossil fuels.
The trial uses power from the hydroelectric facility to operate an electrolyzer at a hydrogen station completed by Yakushima Denko in late March. The stored hydrogen will then be used to fuel an FCX fuel cell car provided by Honda. According to the automaker, vehicle test runs were scheduled to begin on Yakushima's roads in late April. The FCX is equipped with Honda's latest fuel cell stack, which provides subzero startup and operation.
Shell Hydrogen sponsors scholarships
The College of Engineering at Howard University in Washington, DC has established a partnership with Shell Hydrogen (US) to sponsor the Shell Hydrogen Scholars Program, to provide financial aid to undergraduate students in the engineering program. The program will also include funding for student research in hydrogen fuel cell projects. Funding for the two-year program will total $30 000.
Shell Hydrogen (US) has partnered with General Motors to illustrate the advantages of hydrogen fuel cell cars in a demonstration project in Washington [FCB, May 2003]. Shell is converting a service station at 3355 Benning Road in the northeast of the city into a combined hydrogen and gasoline fueling station. Once completed, the site will offer both gasoline for conventional cars and hydrogen for GM's planned road-trial fleet of HydroGen3 fuel cell minivans.
