✦ Synopsis
Gauge-independent canonical formalism for nonrelativistic electrodynamics is discussed. Field strengths are the only objects used as canonical variables. A series of equivalent Hamiltonians of different appearances is derived with a precise physical interpretation of the employed canonical variables. Except in the dipole approximation, new Poisson brackets are not canonical and do contain information about the interaction of the charged particles with the electromagnetic field.
