โฆ Synopsis
Gastric emptying and intestinal transit times were measured in 65 patients, using 51Cr and the doublesampling technique.
The effect of vagotomy and drainage on the duodenal regulation and the postural control of gastric emptying was studied by varying the composition of the meal and the position of the patient.
Following vagotomy and drainage the duodenal regulation of gastric emptying is lost. The stomach empties under the influence of posture, exposing the intestine to the rapid influx of food if the meal is fluid.
Patients with post-vagotomy diarrhoea tolerate this uncontrolled gastric emptying less well than asymptomatic postoperative patients.
Patients with post-vagotomy diarrhoea usually benefit by avoiding meals of a high fluid content. EXPLOSIVE diarrhoea is commonly reported following vagotomy and a drainage procedure. I n some
