The distribution of gaseous products from the laser irradiation of Pittsburgh seam (hvab) coal in various atmospheres was studied by mass spectrometry. The acetylene content of the gas was increased by the presence of argon and nitrogen, and reduced by the presence of helium. The acetylene content of the gas reached a maximum at argon pressures of 80 to 400 torr.
