✦ Synopsis


Burning velocities o[ gaseous nitric acid and Jour hydrocarbons, propane, n-heptane, methylcyclopentane, and toluene have been measured at atmospheric pressure. Burning velocities oj nitric acid-propane flames also have been measured at a hall and two atmospheres. Flame temperature measurements and spectroscopic observations have been made for some of these flames. The appearance o[ these flames is similar to hydrocarbon flames burning with nitrogen dioxide; however, the second combustion wave does not appear unless piloted by secondary air when the temperature o] the combustible mixture is 400°K. When the temperature of the combustible mixture is raised so that the final adiabatic flame temperature approaches 3000°K, reactions downstream of the first combustion wave are speeded up sufficiently to produce a new combustion wave in the absence of secondary air.
