Chapters first and second treat of country roads, their location, grades and tootles of construction. The important question of grades is taken up in considerable detail; and under the head of construction, the matter of drainage, so often neglected~ and on which the good condition of a road so much depends, is given its full share of attention. Chapter third considers the different kinds of road coverings, such as earth, corduroy , plank, gravel, stone, etc. Chapter fourth takes up the question of maintenance and repairs of roads~ and chapter fifth and sixth are on streets and street pavements, sidewalks and foot-paths. These last chapters are full of interest and the information is entirely new, giving descriptions and details of the different street coverings now claiming so much attention in our large cities, and about which there are so many conflicting opinions.
