✦ Synopsis
Iron ions (Fe') produced from a target by a laser pulse react with vapour phase phenanthrene or Pazaphenanthrene in the Fourier-transform mass spectrometer by adding consecutively up to 2 or 4 organic molecules, respectively. A time delay of the order of seconds, employed between the laser pulse and mass spectrum recording, is shown to be necessary for completion of the reaction. The different types of bonding in the compounds formed are discussed.
