207 Swiss Anthracite.--Late analyses of the anthracite coal of Vah)is show about 90 per cent. of c'~rbon and hydrogen and 81 per cent. of ashes. Experiments with American heaters show that it is capable of replacing the Pennsylvania coal, which is sometimes imported at great cost. It has also been tried successfully ill locomotives.--Les ~l[omle.~.. C. Modifications in the Composition of the Atmosphere.--Ph. Jolly has made numerous analyses of the air near Munich, which show a variation in the percentage of oxygen dependent upon the direction of the wind. When thewind is'N. or N. W., the percentage is about 20"92; when it is S. E., S. or S. W., the percentage is only 20"56.--Les Mondes.
