โฆ Synopsis
Char solids withdrawn from a coal combustor possess a wide range of densities. The lower density, carbonrich fraction, however, contains a slightly disporportionate amount of unburned carbon or heating value. This study investigates the enrichment of coal combustion chars by dry density separation in gas fluidized systems. Two types of experiments are performed. First, mainly for solids > 250 pm, the test solids are separated in a fluid&d host medium. Second, mainly for solids <5OOpm, the test solids are fluidized directly and segregated into various density fractions. Positive resolutions have been obtained in both types of experiments. Good density separations with the highest density, most burned, chars collected at the bottom of the test vessels are observed. These separations can be achieved at a low level of gas flow rate (mostly z 1.5 cm/s) in a short period of time (z 3 min).
