✦ Synopsis

Low-temperature pyrolysis of low-rank coals is proposed as a possible technique for producing highheating value solids. Results are presented showing gas yieids and char compositions from IOWtemperature pyrolysis of a lignite at very short residence times. Tar evolution is observed even at temperatures less than 570K coinciding with the first release of COs, presumably from carboxyl groups.
