diffusion and electrolyte penetration in wetproofed gas diffusion electrodes were studied using layers of PTFE-bonded carbon. Minor variations in fabrication and testing procedures resulted in very large variations in catalyst layer wetting characteristics and permeability for gases. The results indicate that the flooded agglomerate model satisfactorily explains the essential features of such dectrodes. Apparently contradictory behavior is the result of variations in the state of the PTFE in such structures but does not, however, require a different model. INTRODLJClYlON

DSKelectrodes are--as in the case of other gas-diffusion electrodes-penetrated by two distinct pore systems, one of which at a given gas pressure is completely filled with gas, whilst the other is filled with electrolyte. In both of these pore systems the respective phases (gas, liquid) are able to

## Abstract The CO tolerance of commercial Pt and PtRu anode electrodes from different suppliers (E‐Tek and Tanaka) has been examined in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFC) using AC‐impedance spectroscopy along steady‐state current‐voltage curves. An oxygen transport model derived for limiting current density operation was employed to explore its use for hydrogen transport. Limiting current data obtained from a variety of fuel cell designs (alkaline, proton exchange membrane, sulphuric acid) demonstrated the model's validity and allowed deter
