✦ Synopsis
Dehydrogenation of a-phyllocladane with several reagents, namely selenium, sulphur and copper sulphide is reported, and provides some insight into this reaction of geochemical importance. The resulting hydrocarbon mixtures were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and most of the reaction products were identified, some for the first time. The use of a "reverse search strategy" made possible the identification of minor and/or coeluting components. The semiquantitative interpretation of the reaction mixtures provides an adequate account of the reaction pathway.
