THIS paper is divided into two parts: first, that treating briefly of the historical subject of lighting, and, second, a brief review of the art as known to-day. Attention is entirely devoted to the subject Of ordinary gas, as time will not permit of a consideration of special gases, such as Pintsch, carburetted-air, acetylene, etc.
