✦ Synopsis

Poly(ethylene tetrachloro-o-phthalate), a polyester from ethylene glycol and tetrachlorophthalic anhydride, was irradiated in the presence of styrene, styrene/dioxane and styrene/n-hexane. The experimental data indicate that, in the presence of some organic solvents, styrene was grafted on the polyester; the type of branching depended on the solvent. In their absence, styrene was mainly homopolymerized. The extent of grafting was related to the nature of solvent and to the G value for hydrogen production of the polymer additive.

Abstraet--Poly(ethylene tetrachloro-o-phthalate) was irradiated in various concentrations in dioxane in a ~°Co cell. No degradation or crosslinking of the main chains was observed up to a dose of 236" 448 Mrad. The predominant effect is the rupture of the carbon-halogen bond and the capture of most
