Un viaje a la extinción de la raza humana. León Trout, el fantasma de un constructor de barcos decapitado, es el narrador de la historia de la decadencia de la humanidad, contada por Vonnegut con humor e ironía, tal y como la viven los supervivientes de un crucero a las Islas Galápagos en el año 1986. Entre estos supervivientes encontramos a personajes tan dispares como Hisako, una mujer que porta genes radiactivos debido a las bombas atómicas; James Wait, que se hizo rico casándose con mujeres ancianas, o el grupo formado por seis chicas huérfanas de la tribu caníbal de los kanka-bonos. En esencia, Galápagos describe cómo una crisis económica mundial, unida a una epidemia, derrumba el entramado político y social y acaba con parte de la humanidad. Vonnegut carga las tintas sobre la estupidez humana, capaz de acabar con la sociedad.
