β¦ Synopsis
For various specimens, values of ~/from 40% to 150% ~were obtained 4). Figure 3 shows the spectral distribution of sensitivity for PbS. It is seen that ~1/, ----3.02/~, corresponding to 0.41 eV. As ~ ~ 1 this can be taken as the intrinsic optical activation energy.
Values of lifetime obtained from equation ( 5), together with values from direct observation of the time-of-rise of photo-conductivity, from diffusion lengths and from the magnitude of i s are shown in figure 4. With the latter method values of < 10 -9 sec. were measured. Comparison with the straight line shows the data may in general be represented by T oΒ’ (resistivity) 2 or T oΒ’ (carrier concentration)-2. Such a relation indicates that the Auger effect is the predominant recombination mechanism --in agreement with P i n c h e r 1 e's theoretical calculations *). He estimates that vn 2 ~ 3 X 1027 cm-6 see., whereas the line of figure 4 represents ~n 2 ~ 5 x 1027 cm -6 sec.
