«Galileo Galilei» es, para muchos, el testamento literario de Bertolt Brecht. En todo caso, es la obra a la que dedicó más esfuerzos y reescrituras desde 1938 hasta su muerte. Año 1592, el sabio florentino Galileo Galilei es profesor de matemáticas en Padua. Vive encerrado en la ciencia con el convencimiento de que una nueva edad histórica acaba de empezar. Andrea, el hijo de la casera, está entusiasmado con los descubrimientos de Galilei y pide que le descifre los secretos. Tales conocimientos hacen tambalear la concepción del Universo de Ptolomeo, que hasta ahora ha sido considerada como válida. Cuando Galileo hace públicos sus descubrimientos sobre el sistema solar recibe la condena de la jeraraquía eclesiástica. Ni siquiera el acceso a la silla de San Pedro del cultivado Cardenal Barberini hace disminuir la presión. Bajo presión de la Inquisición, Galileo renuncia a propagar sus tesis.
