Dumas sidder i Toulon og skriver på et skuespil. En dag møder han en flok "slaver" - livstidsfanger fra "galejerne", fængslet i Toulon - og til sin overraskelse genkender han en af dem, som fortæller ham, at hans navn er "Vicomte Henri de Faverne." Dumas mindes omstændighederne omkring deres møde fire år tidligere: En duel, hvor Dumas deltog som sekundant. De Faverne havde ved den lejlighed kæmpet mindre end godt, og i det hele taget ikke opført sig som en aristokrat burde - efter Dumas' mening.
Tilbage i Paris kontakter Dumas en vis dr. Fabien, der gennem forskellige andre personer fortæller vicomtens historie - en historie om en i enhver henseende foragtelig person, om bedrag, falskneri og fejghed.
