✦ Synopsis
Strongly amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) has been observed on the 366.5 nm UV broad-band transition in molecular sodium. Pump energy and Na2-density dependences indicate clear thresholds for this emission in comparison with the well-known violet bands of Naz. Simple gain calculations, based on ASE considerations, support these observations. The emission appears to be a better candidate for proposed tunable laser action in the sodium molecule. Some new approaches are discussed.
