Abstract

We demonstrate the gain of a standard rectangular dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) enhanced by integrating it with a surface mounted short horn (SMSH). An enhancement of gain by 3.8 dB to 8.5 dBi at 5.95 GHz, and a 10 dB return bandwidth of 3.2% has been achieved from this configuration. Total height of the fabricated structure is only 0.172 λ~0~, or 8.61 mm at 6.0 GHz, and the aperture size is 0.96 λ~0~ × 0.86 λ~0,~ or 48.1 mm × 43.1 mm. The cross‐polarization level of the antenna is <33 dB in both E‐ and H‐planes. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The stacked structure of an aperture-coupled cylindrical ( ) dielectric resonator DR antenna is studied experimentally. The effects of the offset and the air gap between the dri¨en and parasitic DR elements are in¨estigated. It is found that the bandwidth of the stacked structure can increase from t
