Here he remained until May 1979, contributing much to the development of the present Department of Biomedical Engineering. Working in his spare time, and under considerable difficulties, he obtained a special 2nd class Honours Degree in Zoology (London) in 1958 and was appointed Research Assistant. In 1967, he was appointed Lecturer in Experimental Biology, and in 1976, the University of London confirmed the title of Reader in Experimental Pathology and Biomaterials. Dr. Winter left England in 1979 to take up his appointment with the 3M Company.
George, as he was known to everyone, was a hard-working and far-sighted individual who assisted with the birth of bioengineering in the United Kingdom, particularly in the field of orthopaedics. His own interests were in the use of materials for surgical purposes, in particular for wound dressings and orthopaedic implants. In 1966, he was awarded a Ph.D. in Zoology for a thesis entitled "Wound healing in the domestic pig." This detailed the anatomy of wound healing in wounds of the skin and laid the foundation for the present day assessment of wound dressings.
