โœฆ Synopsis

G-banding analysis of the chromosomes of species A, Mastomys natalensis complex is presented. This species has a telocentric Y chromosome unlike west African rats which also have 2n = 32. Comparison of species A with species B shows little obvious homolo. gy. Species A has a polymorphic pericentric inversion which shows a significant deficiency ofheterozygotes. This is interpreted as a result of our pooling samples from different populations with respect to frequencies of the two alternative chromosomes. We cannot determine from our data whether these populations represent different species within species A or localized, inbred populations of a single species.
