## Abstract It is known that polyethylene extruding from a capillary viscometer does not attain a steady‐state output rate immediately following a pressure imposition. The time dependence of output rate was studied quantitatively, and under some extrusion conditions was found to be of surprisingly

The change in melt flow properties, as determined by melt index measurement, as a function of shear history, has been measured for linear polyethylene. It is shown that a drop in melt index occurs when a polymer sample which has had no previous shear history is melted and subjected to shear mixing.
