Abstract
A series of anion exchange membranes with pyridinium groups were prepared by aminating 100% bromomethylated poly(2,6βdimethylβ1,4βphenylene oxide) with 4βvinylpyridine. These membranes exhibited higher ion exchange capacity, lower water uptake, lower area resistance, and better thermal stabilities than the membranes prepared from pyridine. Trimethylamine was used for further amination, but it did not enhance the membrane's permselectivity for fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, hydroxyl, nitrate, nitrite, or thiocyanate anions. Accordingly, 4βvinylpyridine was the better aminating agent to enhance the permselectivity of membranes for some monovalent anions. Β© 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009

Poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4 -phenylene oxide) (PPO) is a chemically resistant polymer and, therefore, an attractive material for the formation of membranes. However, membranes of unmodified PPO prepared by an immersion precipitation possess very low hydraulic permeabilities at the filtration processes. T
Integrally skinned asymmetric flat sheet membranes were prepared from poly(2,6-dimethyl 1,4-phenylene oxide)(PPO) for CO 2 -CH 4 separation. Various experiments were carried out to identify PPO membranes, which have good mechanical strength and gas separation abilities. Membrane strength and selecti
Thin film composite membranes were prepared by coating a thin layer of sulfonated poly ( 1,4dimethyl-2,6-phenylene oxide) polymer on the surface of a polysulfone ultrafiltration membrane. The membrane performance was studied when the sulfonate was either in the hydrogen form or loaded fully with an
