T h e ideal method to document the natural history of a progressive neuromuscular disease should be inexpensive, easy to use in a clinical situation, reproducible, and reflect accurately the course of illness. Functional testing meets these goals to a significant degree. Functional testing can be classified into functional grade and timed functional testing. Both categories of testing can be adapted to a scoring system. This review focuses upon three questions:
