I n examining an extensive series of foetal and infant hearts for congenital defects, we became convinced that the size of the foramen ovale was a misleading index of the capacity of the interatrial communication. The valvula f oraminis ovalis seemed, with striking regularity, to be attached to the septum in such a manner that it would considerably restrict blood flow through the septa1 orifice. We were unable t o find in the literature any reference to this functionally significant condition, except the passing comment of Rnedinger ('71, p. 404):
