The purpose of the paper is to express the concepts of contextual naming systems in a rigorous format using the language and structures of discrete mathematics. Contextual naming is widely used in computer science, and the model presented is intended as a straightforward yet precise definition, to form a basis for formal description. In particular, it provides a general requirement for contextual naming in distributed systems, where a clear understanding of naming is essential. General principles for naming in such systems can thus be established.
