Fulminant type 1 diabetes is characterized by an extremely rapid onset and an absence of islet-related autoantibodies and belongs to type 1B diabetes. It accounts for approximately 20% of acute onset of type 1 diabetes in Japan [Imagawa et al., 2000;Hanafusa and Imagawa, 2007]. The contribution of viral infection to beta cell destruction in this subtype is suggested by the following facts:
