โœฆ Synopsis

is provided to the fueling system from a Hogen ยฎ 6M electrolyzer manufactured by Proton Energy Systems. Proton, a subsidiary of Distributed Energy Systems, is a key supplier to Air Products, and the companies have a supplier arrangement for electrolyzer-based fueling stations [FCB, July 2005].

For the AQMD five-city program, Air Products' Series 200 systems are in operation at Santa Monica, Riverside and Burbank, while the company's HF-150 mobile hydrogen fueler is supplying vehicles at Santa Ana and Ontario [FCB, September 2004]. In all, the five stations will provide hydrogen to a fleet of 30 hydrogen-powered ICE vehicles, which are considered a near-term bridge to zero-emission FCVs in the longer term.

Meanwhile, Air Products' Series 300 hydrogen compression, storage and dispensing technology is being integrated by Chevron Hydrogen into its advanced hydrogen fueling station design, planned for demonstration in Michigan and Florida. At Selfridge, Michigan the station will be located on a military base, and will provide hydrogen for a fleet of light-duty FCVs. In Orlando, Florida the station will be located near the airport, and will fuel a fleet of shuttle buses powered by modified IC engines. Both stations are expected to be operational by the end of 2006.

In polymer electrolyte fuel cells fueled by hydrogen, the hydrogen is generally supplied while flowing at the anode and the residual hydrogen in the exhaust gas is circulated back to the supply line of hydrogen or burnt away. When the exit of the anode is blocked up, the fuel cell becomes a dead-end
