1. It provides an organized set of materials de-signed to produce greater proficiency in the use of the Lao language and at the same time to provide a general introduction to Lao culture. As in Volume I, the usage represented here Is the Vientiane dialect. Dr. Warren G. Yates, Chairman of the FBI Department of East Asian Languages, planned and directed the production of the volume and the related tape recordings and wrote the English language portions.
The Lao passages were written mainly by Mr, Souksomboun Sayasithsena and Mrs, Maliehanh Svengsouk, although a few were written by Mrs, Oouangkeo Sayasithsena and Mr, Oudarone Sombat, Each passage beats the name of the respective author.
The glossary is a joint effort of the Lao instruction staff and Lois Mahler. The Royal Lao Embassy in Washington, D.C, made a vital contribution in lending the typewriter on which the Lao malarial was typed. Camera capy for the Lao language portions was typed by Mrs, Saengchan Suwannapkan, Curt Wilbur did the camera copy for the English language portions. The FSI Audio-Visual stuff, under the direction of Thomas Bower, prepared most of the charts, maps and pictures, most of which were taken from publicalions by the U.S. Information Agency and the Agency for International Development.
The set of related tapes, which may be procured through the National Audio-Visual Center in Washington, provides a selection of speeches, religious and secular music, and an assortment of other audio materials related to life in Laos. They are not essential for the use of the textbook but can add a dimension of understanding of Lao culture which is not possible through visual material alone,
FSI gratefully acknowledges the financial assistance of the (AS. Office of Education in the development and publication of this volume.
