Each lesson is built around a story from an East African newspaper. The first 25 have to do with announcements about meetings, The stories themselves use approximately 160 different words and the average word occurs in two different stories. Each word is also used a number of times in the supporting pedagogical apparatus.
The principles we have followed in preparing these lessons are three:
(1) Each lesson should be short. The average length is two pages.
(2) Subject matter should be authentic. Each text is taken from an East African newspaper.
(3) Students should treat each text from a number of different points of view. Instructions appear at appropriate points throughout the lessons.
It should be pointed out that 'authentic' does not necessarily mean 'standard'. The newspapers of East Africa differ in the degree to which their Swahili shows the influence of English and other languages, and in general literary quality, and the same sorts of difference may be found between stories that appear side-by-side in a single newspaper. The stories used in this book have been selected and arranged in sequence solely from the point of view of their vocabulary, so as to make the introduction of new words as gradual as possible.
The Foreign Service Institute is grateful for the comments that were made by readers of the first printing of this unpublished experimental edition, and will welcome further suggestions and criticisms.
