✦ Synopsis

The Eighth Congress of the International Society for Ex- perimental Microsurgery (ISEM) was held in Montre ´al, Canada, July 16-19, 2006. The scientific organizing committee, chaired by Dr. Huifang Chen (who has worked in Montre ´al since 1988) created an interesting and informative program comprising the many different facets of experimental microsurgery, its clinical translations, and applications. More than 60 abstracts were presented and discussed in 10 sessions throughout the congress. The majority of these presentations (42 abstracts) covered experimental studies, indicating that experimental research still remains the backbone of our Society. Transplantation-related research focusing on organ rejection, tolerance induction, xenotransplantation, and ischemia-reperfusion injury, as well as new models for experimental research, was the main focus of the experimental talks.

However, the focus on clinical applications of experimental research has steadily increased over the last few conferences and was represented by a number of abstracts covering cutting edge topics such as face transplantation, and laparoscopic, and robotic surgery. Eleven state-ofthe-art lectures on the most recent experimental and clinical topics rounded out the program with a comprehensive update of the microsurgical field.

Twenty-seven selected articles, representing a broad spectrum of the congress topics, are included in this Frontiers Issue of Microsurgery. Once again, the Interna-
