β¦ Synopsis
Nothing Stays the Same Volume 3, Number 1 of the Journal of College Counseling UCC) introduced to you a new editor-a veteran of college counseling. In this introduction, I made statements such as "I have the opportunity . . . to explore some of my professional interests" and "unlike the life of the academic professor who generally assumes the responsible and exacting task of editing a professional journal." The final sentence described my impression of feeling "comfortably challenged."
None of this has changed. First, after having prepared two issues ofJCC, I continue to consider myself fortunate as editor to have the opportunity to explore some of my professional interests. Second, in hindsight, I see that I was somewhat glib in using the phrase "comfortably challenged." I am indeed challenged by the "responsible and exacting task of editing a professional journal"-a challenge that I continue to welcome.
However, it seems that in our continuing efforts to maintain personal stability, we are shown repeatedly that nothing ever stays the same. After 10 years of service to students in a large division of student affairs in a major western university, I am now a full-time .associate professor of psychology in an institution in the South, focusing my time and energy on teaching and training emerging counselors. I, too, am now engaged in "the life of an academic professor." I trust that the pursuits I will encounter in this new life, combined with the experience I bring from student affairs, will only enrich my qualifications for the "responsible and exacting task" of guiding JCC. I continue by reminding you thatJCC exists to benefit you, the practitioner providing direct service daily to students in our colleges and universities. However,JCC is also yourforurn. I urge you to examine those areas of everyday practice that are rich in information worthy of publication. Your colleagues can most certainly benefit from your experience and your knowledge; therefore, it is vital that you share that knowledge. JCC is the medium through which you can do this. Your manuscripts, particularly those focused on innovative and successful practice, are not only welcomed, they are strongly encouraged.
