✦ Synopsis
The paper presents an investigation of collective dislocation dynamics effects during plastic deformation, that arise from long-range dislocation interactions and lead to stochastic slip localization on a mesoscopic scale. The characteristics of these effects are related to microstructural properties. Stochastic integration with respect to time and space gives their macroscopic signature in terms of the corresponding fluctuations of the external stress and strain. The theoretical results are compared to experimental findings on monocrystals deformed in single slip. The critical stress fluctuations associated with the Portevin-Le Chdtelier effect (serrated yielding) are discussed. Quantitative agreement with the experiments is good.
