✦ Synopsis
A rigorous numerical technique for simulation of electromagnetic wave propagation in one-dimensional Kerr-nonlinear optical structures is presented. Maxwell's equations are solved in the frequency domain and transformed into a new system that can be easily integrated. The technique is applied to model optical bistability in multilayer slow-wave structures.

## Abstract The work of Barba et al.1 is fatally flawed on two counts: (i) the existence of Tellegen mediums is unrecognizable in modern electromagnetic theory, and (ii) the time‐domain constitutive relations used in the commented upon work are noncausal. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Op
