This adjustment of" the cut-off' is pretty generally accepted by engineers as the best theo~'etieally. But in aetual steam engine practiee the adjustment will be quite different, for several reasons, such as excessive size of cylinder, causing loss by radiation of heat and cooling by expansion, fl:iction by mechanism, undue, strains of parts or increased piston speed, etc. For instance, the size of the crank pin enters into the problem. In practice, the indicator diagranl from an engine running under the most ihvorable eonditi(ms, or with the most ecouonlical practical cut-off, should show its narrow end cut square off with some considerable breadth, instead of t)eing al)sohttely sharp; and what
