โœฆ Synopsis

This paper presents the free vibration analysis of doubly curved open deep sandwich shells made of thin outer layers and a relatively thick core. The outer layers are assumed to be made of high strength and high density material. The core is a low strength low density material. The RayleighยฑRitz method, in which the displacement ยฎelds are deยฎned by Bezier surface patches, is used to obtain the natural frequencies. The formulation procedure is developed for the analysis of open panels circumscribed by four curvilinear edges. Numerical results are obtained for circular cylindrical and spherical sandwich panels with the boundary conditions given by: one curved edge clamped and the remaining three edges free as well as two opposite edges clamped and the other two completely free.

Sandwich panels have a very high sti!ness to weight ratio, which makes them particularly useful in the aerospace industry where carbon "bre reinforced plastics and lightweight honeycomb cores are being used in the construction of #oor panels, fairings and intake barrel panels. A finite element analysis for the free vibration behaviour of doubly curved shells is presented in which eight-noded curved quadrilateral isoparametric finite elements are used. The first order shear deformation theory for thin and shallow shells is used in the formulation. Results are obtained for

There are few reports on the free vibration of soft core doubly-curved sandwich shells. Previous studies are largely based on the equivalent single layer theories in which the natural frequencies are grossly overestimated. This study deals with the analytical free vibrations of doubly curved sandwic
