✦ Synopsis
Benzenesulfonyl radical can be generated from sodium benzenesulfinate in aqueous acetic acid or formic acid. A benzenesulfonyi radical induced radical reaction of tt~-allylsulfonylalkyl substituted aromatic and heteroaromatic derivatives is described. Alkyl radicals can be generated efficiently from allylsulfones. This sulfonyl radical induced reacfon provides a synthetically useful method for the synthesis of polycyclic aromatic and heteroaromatic derivatives.

AbstractÐFree radical cyclization reactions of alkylsulfonyl and alkylthio substituted aromatic amide derivatives are described. Carbon radicals can be generated ef®ciently from the sulfonyl radical induced reaction of allylsulfones or the oxidation of carbonyl compounds with manganese(III) acetate.
